We start off learning how to compare numbers by using this poem:

Mr. Gator likes to munch
on juicy numbers for his lunch.
Small numbers make his belly sore,
big numbers make him shout for more!
When Mr. Gator takes a bite,
large numbers feed his appetite.

I found this poem here:Poem

I made an interactive freebie to go along with comparing numbers. Click the link below to download!
My students use this packet during their independent reading time. They will choose a book from their book bin and write a prediction they made and something they inferred while reading that book. We then get together and share their inferences and predictions at the end of Reader's Workshop.
First grade must have math homework twice a week. Normally I send home math fact practice, however that's not always beneficial for all of my students. I have a few exceptionally high students that know their Math facts forwards and backwards. I find some time to enrich these students. We've worked on double digit addition and subtraction and now I am moving them to rounding. I know a lot of 3rd graders struggle with rounding, so I figured I'd go ahead and get home of my first graders ahead of the game.

Click below to get some rounding freebies- Rounding to the tens and rounding to the hundreds.
One of those reasons is Christmas stories. I LOVE reading Christmas stories to my class. In fact, I think most of our days revolve around different Christmas stories once we are in December.

I read my class the book The Best Christmas Ever. After we are finished reading, they will go back to their desk and write about a time they helped someone. You could honestly use this prompt with a number of books. You wouldn't even have to read a book in order to use this prompt. You could even find a way to use it as a personal narrative.
We are reading a fairy tale and then a fractured fairy tale. The students are finding character traits to describe the characters in both fairy tales. We then discuss how the character has changed when the point of view (from who is writing the book) has changed.
They are loving it-- and so am I. I am working on a fairy tale reader's response and writing unit. I will post it when I am done. For now though, I am going to put a page from they packet up as a freebie.
We read different gingerbread books, compare/contrast the stories, and write character traits of the gingerbread characters. We cut out a gingerbread man and write adjectives to describe him. He hangs on our wall for a little while, until...oh no!-- he's gone and there's a note: "Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!" Our gingerbread man runs away! The kids DIE over this. They swear they see him running in the halls, outside at recess, in the classroom. The kids write letters to him to try to persuade him to come back. Finally, at the end of our gingerbread unit someone finds him. Sometimes it's the principal, or an assistant, or another teacher. They ALWAYS find him doing something sneaky. They catch him and bring him back to our classroom with a story of what they found him doing!

As I'm thinking ahead to what we'll be doing in a few weeks (and watching it snow, which is really getting me excited to teach our christmas/winter themed units), I went ahead and made a gingerbread sight word color sheet.
There's 2 different sheets- one has 1st grade sight words and the other has our corporations 2nd grade sight words. If you would like to grab them for FREE, head on over to my teacherspayteachers store.
After that, it's time for fall break. Thank God because I am exhausted.

I had most of my conferences last night, so I have a lot of free time to plan today. After break we are going to start learning about spiders and bats.

We are also spending time working on becoming fluent with our addition facts. We will be moving on to subtraction soon, so I want to make sure that my kids are very familiar and comfortable with addition.
I figure I'll start off by telling a little bit about myself:

I am in my third year of teaching first grade. I am a mommy to a wonderful 2 year old little boy- Brookes, and a wife to a wonderful husband- Scott.

I enjoy crafting, cooking, and of course - teaching my little ones.

I love to share teaching resources, so I'll definitely be posting those on here.

To get started...I will post a freebie tomorrow.
